As the 802.11b/g 2.4 Ghz gains momentum, users should begin migrating quickly to 802.11a for the following reasons:
- Less interference. Not only is there less interference with other WiFi systems, but there is less interfernce with other crp in the ISM (industrial Scientific and Medical) license-exempt.More channels.
- 11b/g has, in the USA, only 3 non-overlapping channels. 802.11a offers 12; systems compliant with 802.11h, (which provides automatic backoff from nearby radar systems operating in overlapping frequencies) offer 23 non-overlapping channels.
- Non-interference with exisitng 11b/g devices. One problem with 802.11g is that, if 11b devices in the same channel are active, the g speeds are seriously derated.
the higher frequencies of 11a means that signals proagate for shorter distances.
For buildings like schools, where classrooms form the basic coverage area, 11a is a great solution.
More later.
